New Delhi: March 04, 2026:

The Supreme Court of India has issued contempt notices to 51 private hospitals in Delhi for failing to comply with earlier directions mandating free treatment for patients from the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS). The court observed that despite receiving land at concessional rates from government agencies, these hospitals were not meeting the requirement of reserving 10% of Inpatient Department (IPD) beds and 25% of Outpatient Department (OPD) services for poor patients.

A bench comprising Justices P.K. Mishra and N.V. Anjaria came down heavily on both the hospitals and the Delhi government, noting that authorities had acted “casually” in enforcing compliance. The matter has been posted for further hearing on March 24, 2026.
