The Ezhukone Madankavu Sree Mahadevar Temple at Kollam has approached this Court seeking to command respondents 1 and 2 to afford adequate and effective police protection for the smooth and peaceful conduct of the Annual Temple Festival from 14.03.2023 to 24.03.2023.
The petitioner is a Temple represented by its Secretary. The Annual Temple Festival of the year 2023 is from 14.03.2023 to 24.03.2023. The petitioner contends that huge crowds of devotees are expected to come to the Temple for the Festival on the last three days. There are various programs being conducted in connection with the Temple Festival including procession. Going by the past experience, miscreants may try to disturb the Temple festival. Therefore, unless respondents 1 and 2 give adequate protection for the smooth conduct of the Festival, the petitioner will be put to hardship.
The Government Pleader entered appearance on behalf of the respondents and submitted that since a Festival is going on in the Temple, in the normal course, the police will be alert and if necessary, assistance can be given for smooth conduct of the Temple Festival.
I have heard the learned counsel for the petitioner and the learned Government Pleader representing the respondents.
Taking into consideration the fact that the petitioner is seeking police assistance for smooth conducting of the Festival, where large number of devotees are likely to gather and there is likelihood of disturbances, it would be only just and proper that the respondents deploy sufficient number of police personnel as is found adequate, for peaceful conduct of the Festival.
In the circumstances, the writ petition is disposed of directing the 2nd respondent-Sub Inspector of Police to deploy sufficient number of police force for smooth conduct of the Temple Festival being held from 14.03.2023 to 24.03.2023.
