This Original Application is registered on the basis of the News item published by PTI on 22.08.2023 in respect of death of a worker in a steel plant in Raigarh District of Chhattisgarh on account of falling hot slag on him and there is apprehension of non-compliance of environmental laws in the process of disposal of slag.

A reply on behalf of Chhattisgarh Environment Conservation Board has been filed without touching the aspect of handling of slag which has been the cause of accident in the matter. In this context, the guidelines prepared by CPCB to deal with handling and management of slags generated from pyro-metallurgical operations in Iron and Steel Industries need to be referred.

Hence, at this stage, we deem it proper to issue notice to the Project Proponent. The Registry of the Tribunal is directed to serve the Project Proponent i.e. M/s Jindal Steel and Power Limited, Patrapali Village, Raigarh.

Since the matter relates to the Central Zone Bench of the Tribunal, therefore, it is transferred to the Central Zone Bench, Bhopal for appropriate further action in the matter.

The original application registered in Principal Bench is accordingly disposed of for registration in the Central Zone Bench, Bhopal.
